Key Question
Looking for advice.
This weekend my key to the JK was stolen (along with my jeans from the gym...long story that I don't feel like getting into...). I have a spare, but am now worried that this ar$eh0le has my other key and goes to my gym... Can't be more than an handful of JK's that go to my gym.
So, I need to buy a new key so that I have a spare. But can I get the new one and my old one re-chipped or coded so that the one the thief took won't work in my ignition? I realize it'll probably work in the doors and interior boxes, but at least if I new he couldn't steal the JK it would be a better feeling than the one I have now...
Anyone have experience with this? I've heard it can be expensive for these keys. Any ideas on how much the dealership would want? Is there a better way or place to buy them? I live in Canada...
Thanks.

Check and see if you have a plug that looks like this and it is located under the steering wheel right under the dash. Its a theft lock with this plug pulled the jeep will not start even with the key. Im pretty sure the key alone is like $100.00 then you may have to replace the ingnition and for sure reprogram the computer.I may be wrong but it sounds like its gonna cost some cash.

Go to a good locksmith. In Chrysler vehicles you can have 6 keys programed to it, or maybe 4. But each key is programed under a certain slot. They can erase keys that are programed in. They can hook you up. If not the dealership can too.
I understand your concern. I think you'll have to go to a Chrysler dealership--I don't think locksmiths have the software tools to program a new key unless you already possess two keys. Also, discuss this with your insurance company. They may pay to have your vehicle rekeyed--it would seem to be in their interest as much as yours. Then you'll only be out the deductible (of course, if you're like me, that's probably more than the cost of the entire job. LOL.)
The locksmith I worked for was able to do this. To program the key without having two of them is pretty easy. We had a good relationship with the Chrysler dealership. We would call up their service dept, give them the last 8 from the VIN. And they would give us the key cut code and the programming code. We were about half the cost of the dealership. Call around and see what they can do for you before going to the dealership.
NOTE: If a programmed key is lost, see your authorized
dealer to have all remaining keys erased from the system’s
memory. This will prevent the lost key from
starting your vehicle. The remaining keys must then be
reprogrammed. All vehicle keys must be taken to an
authorized dealer at the time of service to be
reprogrammed.
