I bought a lifetime bumper to bumper for $1100. I figure if so much as the air conditioner goes out in the next ten years, warranty paid for itself. I have no illusions about anything major being covered due to my extensive mods, but I have had to pay for things like evap cores before, so it was money well spent. My service dept happens to be a customer of mine, and the service manager a good friend, so I guess I am lucky. All that said, I think the extended warranty is a good idea if you get it cheap enough.

I bought new as well, for the same reasons as the above posters. Jeep Wranglers don't depreciate very well after all. With that in mind, I'm glad I bought new, not because I have "so much money to throw away", but because I don't have ANY surprises in the "hidden/unknown damage" department and I know I'll be keeping it till the wheels fall off.

Now my kids, on the other hand...used used used! Busses, APC's, maybe a tank for the middle boy...thank God they're still in elementary.

since my normal warranty was out at 36K, and we extended my powertrain to 70K they don't cover any interior rattles and that inside the vehicle. My dash has some annoying rattles and stuff, and i dont' want to tear it apart to get a quiet ride. For that i'll put the hardtop on i guess. BUT after i had my rear main seal replaced at 37,000 the Jeep has some kind of metal on metal scraping sound when accelerating the sound lasts for a few seconds and is gone. Dealership couldn't make the Jeep do it "at idle" so they never did anything about. I keep that service notice/reciept in the Jeep at all times in case the transmission goes. But they are good with the Jeep.

Good luck on your fixes

Have you checked the spot welds on the heat shield that is on the exhaust crossover pipe. One hairline crack in a spot weld can cause the rattle your describing. Check with a flashlight and a screwdriver. So far I've pryed three away from the pipe for that rattle. I thought something was wrong with my tranny too.

OP: congrats on the smart move to purchase that warranty. The build quality for Chrysler products is less than ideal, but even with a used Honda there's always that risk. I'd say buying a used Jeep with that warranty was smarter than buying a new Jeep. I'm certain you came out well ahead. Nice job.

To tell you the truth, I've been around this forum a long time, and I've never read where anyone wrote a blanket excuse for Jeeps to make any manner of noise (as your post seems to imply).

As for your own problems: There were 36K miles of unknown use put on your Jeep before you owned it. The problems you're having may be the direct result of hard use--we have no way of knowing (at least you didn't tell us you bought it from a little old lady who only drove it to church on Sundays).

Extended warranties: Hey, it's your money. But, don't kid yourself. You bought a maintenance contract, not a warranty. IOW: You agreed with someone on a fixed price and he'll repair pretty much anything that goes wrong with your vehicle. If that works for you, great! Most folks find that it's a losing proposition (otherwise, those selling them would stop selling them--think about it).
You know I was 2 old ladies - one with a TJ Sahara (White and Tan Top w/Handicap Plate) and one with a JK 2 door (Rescue Green)... Now I didn't see these old ladies on Sunday, but I guess you never do know...

As for me, I bought mine with 300 miles on it and I got a great mechanic friend who fixes all things Jeep, so *that's* my extended warranty (47k and no issues, need a brake job though, soon, I think). But for people who don't "have a guy", I can see someone wanting to buy one for the peace of mind factor.

Whatever's Clever!

WRONG! First of all, this is a great shop. I didnt ask, the mechanic came out and asked me to come for a drive with him. We spent 20 minutes recreating every rattle and thump and creak i complained about. We came back, put it on the hoist and looked it over together. Heres what we found.

1. BOTH U joints worn well beyond allowable tolerance. Sloppy sloppy sloppy.

2. ALL 4 BALL JOINTS GONE. 1/8th to a 1/4 inch total play.

3. The heat sheild that sits above the tranny/tcase was hanging and loose and bent all to hell.

4. The clutch noise mimics a throwout bearing/pressure plate TSB.

5. My jeep FINALLY popped out of gear with a mechanic driving it. This means new 1st gear and 1-2 synchro.

6. Rear drivers side brake seized and rotor lipped badly. Pads very worn. All other brakes fine.

I have owned this jeep for approx 4 months and my limit of wheeling is hardpack dirt roads very often (i live on one) and a very few trips to hunting camps and fishing holes. I have put 5000 miles on it since i bought it. I bought it with almost 36 000 miles. I upgrade my warranty to the maximum on all areas of coverage when i bought it.

So you guys that say ITS A JEEP SO IGNORE THOSE RATTLES AND CLUNKS? Maybe you're due for a service appointment.

Ouch, hope none of my "Jeep noises" turn out this bad!
