Default Lifter knocking - help!

My '07 JKU has started knocking pretty badly @ 85k miles. I took it to an auto shop and the mechanic thinks it is the lifters because it is coming so high. Changed the oil (which was low after approximately 2500 miles - it burns oil apparently) and ran a full tank of 93 octane through it with no help.

My question is where should I take it for inspection / repair? I hate my local Jeep dealer (memphis) but will take it here if necessary. The guy at the dealership said it would be $95 to just diagnose the problem.

Any ideas? Would you reccomend local auto / engine shop vs dealer? Any other things I should try (additives, etc) before I take her in?

Have you checked the oil? Many 07's burn oil, including mine. Before anything else check the oil level and make sure its not low or out. Then change the oil and switch to a thicker oil like 5w30 or 10w30 and see if this helps or fixes it before blowing money on getting it checked out

Try something heavier like 10w-30,10w-40,15w-40.If still knocking with either of these oils your engine is most likely done

X2. Also was the motor ever run on low oil or allowed to go an excessive amount of time between the oil changes?

10W-30 or thicker! I am running 10W-30 mobil 1 now and I only have 20k on mine. She likes it and runs smooth.
