"course thats what the computer says, i dont do calculations. i saw as high as 29mpg but i dont wanna sound too unbelieveable.. "

24mpg's is just as unbelievable. You're gonna have to calculate by hand if you want real data and I'm sure you're not getting more than 19 or 20...which is still better than an auto will get though.

Widewing: Yes, you're absolutely correct about the final drive ratios. However, sticks are overwhelmingly getting higher mileage than the autos. The shifting points and efficiency are probably behind that. Sticks with more gears tend to get better mileage than autos with fewer gears regardless of the vehicle because more gears means more efficiency. The first thing I noticed in my JK, after driving it for a few hundred miles, was the stupid shifting points. Shifts waaaay too late.

24mpg on the freeway at 60mph is not miles per gallon average, plac. I'm talking miles per gallon overall. And besides I won't trust what the computer says. It's been established on this board that it's inaccurate.

average for that speed and configuration as i carefully stated. my city is much worse of course. usually 14-15mpg. computer is good enough for me, i dont care enough to start doing calculations. ill feel better this way anyway.

I agree that around town, with some stop and go driving, the 6 speed has the edge. You can short shift and have more flexibility with where you keep the revs. Out on the highway, with cruise control governing speed, the auto gets better mileage. Great if you spend lot of time on the highway, not so hot if you spend a lot of time in slower traffic.

My commute is about 50-50, and I average about 19.5 MPG on 33" tires. If I were to bolt the OEM Goodyear SR-As back on, mileage would jump up about 2 MPG. Those SR-As were great for fuel mileage, but awful for just about everything else except snow.

My regards,

Widewing

That translates into better fuel economy than the 6 speed at normal cruising speeds."
The overwhelming consensus on this board is that the 6 speed averages far better mileage than the auto. I have an auto and I drive like a grandma and average 18.5. Those with sticks are getting up to 21mpg.
Not to be picky, but...

"Average" and "up to" are two very different things.

With my automatic and 4.10's:
I average 18.5, and get up to 23 on the highway. The average is lower because most of my driving is in town or on the trail.

"Averaging up to," is what I implied.

Autos are averaging up to 18.5. Sticks are averaging up to 21.

Thanks for clarifying. I'm learning more and more that I'm lousy with email and message boards. I need to take a class in writing clearly.
