Default Manual Tranny Problems

Hi all,

So, about a week ago I started to get a rough/rattle sound coming from the tranny tunnel at about 1.5-2k rpm. Today I took it into the dealership and the tech thinks it might be a bearing going bad. Monday it goes back to have the tranny pulled and the problem verified. The things still shifts great and other than the rattle, it is smooth. I've got a little over 8k miles on it now. Thankfully the dealer is not hassling me over the lift and tires, but the dude said if it happens again within 8k miles, they might be less likely to warranty it.

I know some of you have had glitches with the tranny, and I know there is a search function, but if you feel like it I'd like you to chime in and tell me what the problem was and if it was fixed.

Thanks,

-Derek

I have the same problem, please post the outcome. When I went to my dealership they told me that nothing was wrong.

I will do so. Like I said, at this point it is still speculation on the dealers side.

I thought that too at first, but....

1. Lift was installed by Northridge 4X4. Dave knows his stuff.

2. Rattle happens while in neutral and at the same revs as while driving. So that rules out tires or driveline.

3. Rattle/sound does not come through the floor boards OR shifter. There are actually no vibrations felt, just the sound coming from the tranny tunnel.

Default Update!

O.k.,

The dealer called ad said it was a bad input bearing causing the problem. The dealer has also decided to REPLACE 8 bearings in the tranny just to be sure. All under warranty. I think that is

I hope to pick it up on Friday, but it depends when they get the parts.

I hope for your sake they are right. Mine too has been rattling really bad at around 2k rpm. It sounded downright awful and almost like a failed bearing rattle. It turned out to be the heat shield on the exhaust as it runs across in front of the tranny. The front weld on the passengers side broke a few months ago. I re tack welded it and it was fine till about 2 weeks ago. The rear weld at the same end broke. I am out of shielding gas so I put a hose clamp over it and no more rattle. I will weld it when I get more gas.

I just hope for your sake they don't tear open the tranny and it was the exhaust the whole time.

I agree, but the input bearing did show some damage. The reason they are replacing 8 bearings total is incase some metal came off the input bearing and did unseen damage to the rest of them. We will see if they did a good job in about 30K mi. But at this point I'm happy that they are doing more than just replace the offending part.

Check your clutch line where it goes down after it passes under the brake booster-mine had an awfull rattle when you pushed in the clutch, even half way. It turned out the line would move just enough to rattle against the firewall. There are some posts on here about this. The dealer replaced my disc and throwout bearing and that was not the problem

O.k.,

Picked Mr. Jeep up today and all is well. They replaced 8 bearings and the rattle is gone, it shifts great and it quieter than I remember (its been 10 days!). It was the input bearing that went bad.
