Manual Transmission Popping out of Gear
Hey JKers, question about manual transmission troubles. I have a little over 29k miles and this just started happening about 2 months ago. The first 1-2 times I sort of chalked it up to an unusual oddity. But it has now happened over a dozen times! It seems to happen more and more now.
Again this is a manual transmission....The problem has happened 11 out of 12 times in first and 1 in 2nd gear. It always happens from a standstill stop. So I am stopped and in 1st gear (I know I am clearly and definitively in 1st gear as I am very conscience of it now!). I start going by slowly applying the gas as I ease off the clutch...and pop! The transmission snaps out of gear into neutral.
Obviously I am going to take this to the dealer but wanted to get some ideas from people before I take it in.
Thanks!

I haven't had my tranny pop out of gear by itself, but, occasionally when I'm shifting out of 2nd it really pops out hard. I've also noticed since it got relatively cold (freezing) that shifting from 1st into 2nd is not very smooth when the tranny is cold. The two might be related and I plan to ask about it when I take it in for service.
I also have the crappy shift from 1st to 2nd when it get cold out. Two different dealers have told me that Chrysler says "This is a characteristic of this transmission". Mine also popped out of gear, always 4th, when cold. The fix for mine was to replace the LOWER boot on the shifter, not the one in the cab but the one underneath that. No popping out of gear after that, it was a year ago that the repair was done.

You know when you're getting it looked at?
I know it shouldn't be happening but it happens to a lot of manual trans. For safety you should not be applying power to any gear with you hand off the shifter. Once in that gear and moving it should not pop out unless something like the shift boot is pushing it out.
Have it looked at by the dealer but in the meantime and after always get in the habit of keeping your hand on the shifter until you are up to speed.

I'm not sure if its even the same thing but my old Porsche used to do that. I was told at the time that it WAS a transmission problem (don't recall exactly what it was) but I never bothered with it becuase it would've cost me like $2,000,000 to fix the stupid thing. You might want to get it checked out though.
