AUTO = BORING............IMHO...part of the whole jeep experience is missed with an auto, your just sittin there . It's almost like having an auto motorcycle......I got the 6 speed because it was a jeep.......

I guess I will hang my head in shame then. No, I know that there will always be a debate but it's nice to hear the pros of an automatic from so many people. Thanks for all the opinions and everything else I've read on the forum that's geting me cranked up for my first Jeep.

No shame eric.bragg Nothing wrong with the auto. I have one now and I've had my share of sticks too. It's not like I can't drive a stick if I want/need to. To each his (her) own.

Yeah, this would be an interesting poll, even if just to see the percentages!

Your right about my math... forgot about the torque converter... That being said, I disagree about hitting the rocks harder. Maybe its just me, but I can crawl up some hard moderate climbs without touching my clutch or smacking any rocks. As long as I can keep my tires rotating just below half a MPH, I don't need know stinking clutch or worry about stalling.

The crawl ratio...there is really no "granny" in the auto as mentioned in this post- I coast at 9-10mph downhill in 4wd/lo/1 and have too ride the brake...
I find this annoying -

Default auto 2x more? help me understand

according to allpar.com the auto has a 1st gear ratio of 2.84 and the manual has a 1st gear ratio of 4.46

so if you go here and punch in those numbers http://www.4x4extremesports.com/calculators.php

on the Find Overall Crawl Ratio calculator

I get
Transmission Ratio: 4.46
Transfer Case Ratio: 4.0 Axle Ratio: 4.1 Overall Ratio: 73.14399999999999
for the manual and

Transmission Ratio: 2.84
Transfer Case Ratio: 4.0 Axle Ratio: 4.1 Overall Ratio: 46.57599999999999
for the auto? which for the manual sounds right ie. 73 to 1

where does the 2x come in to make the auto higher? How does the 2.84 turn into 5.68? which would give it 93.15199999999999 or 93 to 1

They think that a sport car or off road has to have stick (think Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati etc...).

lately they are converted to auto cause of the huge traffic we have in aur city (even in the small one) and they found out that auto is great!

Personally it is 22 years that I willing to have auto, and after a stick Land Cruiser finalli I got my auto Jeep!

Great, absolutely great!
