Question Mopar locking gas cap -- am I missing something?

I bought a Mopar locking gas cap (the $22 one, not the $90+ one that can be re-keyed) and I must be missing something. If I "lock" it and screw the cap on, it will just spin if you try and unscrew it.... which is the whole idea, right.... but if I press down a bit on the cap and unscrew it, the damn thing just comes out like it wasn't even locked.

On my TJ I had the fancy locking cap that you could get re-keyed to match the jeep keys, but I checked with the local dealer and that cap is now over $90, which is just crazy.

I'm tempted to get the screw-in locking door instead.

Anybody else notice that the locking gas cap doesn't lock?

mine was doing the same thing and i thought i was fucked too haha try this, to put ur gas cap on take the key out of the cap. put it in the gas throat and twist down and keep going untill it till it make a clicking sound like u have gone too far, once you have done that try to twist it off and it should just spin, to get it off put ur key in and turn the key a liltte then twist the cap off.

also every time u lock it, make sure u just twist it on no key needed and make sure u twist it on till u hear it click, like if u have stock gas cap somewhere it should make the same sound as that one if u twist it too far.

Thanks -- I'll give that a try. It does seem like the key doesn't turn as far as I'd expect it to... but I didn't want to snap the key off trying too hard (and I was trying pretty hard).

It sounds like it should work like a gas cap in any other vehicle

I know, right... I mean, I'm not the smartest guy on the planet, but I've used a gas cap before
