my favorite perf mod
Okay, backstory- I have had my jeep for a little over a year now, but last month had to get a new job that was more than five minutes away, so I started paying really close attention to my fuel usage. My rig is a 13 jku with a terraflex lift on it and 285/70/17 terra grapplers. That I got for like three hundred bucks used. Driving about 55-65 on a hilly two lane highway I was averaging between 16-18 mpg on regular fuel. My friend started using gas from a local grocerychain that is 93oct and totally clean of ethanol (most stations use between 10-15% ethanol in their fuel), he saw a couple mpgs in his Mazda with it so I gave it a try last week. After 2 weeks of driving and three tanks full my average is between 19-21 so far, and the weather is colder which typically kills my mileage on regular. I filled up again today with the good stuff and paid really close attention to my entire drive.
In general the rig has more pep and pulls itself over the steeper hills with less lugging and zero downshifts. On top of this, the eco light remained on significantly more than it has prior.
In the near future I plan on doing an intake and exhaust upgrade, mostly for sound, but an mpg never hurts, and probably a tuner a little further down the line if I desire more pep after moving to 35" destination m/ts this spring or summer. At my next oil change I plan on running techron through in concentrate to clean out the fuel system and maybe do an ek10 induction cleaning at my work.
Just wanted to share my experience, if you have ethanol free gas near you, give it awhirl. It hurts the wallet on the first fill, but Inotice I'm going at least a day longer between my fill ups. It seems to be breaking even at least if not saving money for me.
Ethanol burns fast which makes it good for dragster usage, but individual molecules contain about a third less of the energy than gasoline which is why e85 typically gets worse mileage and power.
