Default My transfer case seemed done busted... but NOoooo...

I just got this new JK to use as a towed. Started installing the wire harness and baseplate stuff this afternoon at home. In the middle of this I took a break and decided to make sure I understood the procedures for getting the transfer case into neutral and then back out, etc....

My xfer case shifter went smoothly into it's proper place in the cosmos with the engine off and auto in neutral... then I went to Park and tested it to actually be in neutral. Way cool...

THEN however I attempted the reverse process to get the transfer case back into 2H and that thing was NOT wanting to do any such thing. I thought I was either busted or I was about to bust sumthin. This ain't right.... I tried rolling the car just a bit and low and behold the transfer case shifted like fresh butter on a warm siberian afternoon . This is a GOOD thing....

I tried it again several times and pretty much came to the conclusion that the transfer case wants to have the gears moving a bit or it will not work properly. AFTER I figured all this out through skill and determination..... I went into the house and logged into this board to see if maybe I had "issues " and needed sumthin adjusted. Nope. If I had read a couple threads on this subject before messin with it I wouldn't have had to re-invent the wheel.

Sheesh ......

Welcome!

2 to 4 hi should be smooth. Once you get into neutral or 4 low it likes to be moving, you are correct. The gears aren't sync'd.

It takes a couple practice swings, but then it's easy.

Confession is good for the soul my son.
I'll bet that there are very few newbies who would admit to doing the same thing.
Now for your pennance go play in the dirt!

And welcome to the magical world of 4WD...
It's unfortunate to say but you've now progressed further into that realm than 60% of the Jeep owners out there

But then again, 87% of all statistics are made up anyhow...

Last fall my neighbor went out and bought a really nicely equipped Toyota Tundra. Well, this past winter we had 38" of snow from one 24 hour storm. He was toolin' around in 4-hi just fine. He came knocking on my door 2 days later in a rush. They had plowed the streets and he needed to get to work...but he couldn't get out of 4WD.
..Dun-Dun-Duuuunnnnnn!!!!!
I showed him the old...get'er rollin'...slow...and put it pack in 2WD....

Good to go.

Besides, if someone TOLD you how to do it, it wouldn't be as satisfying. Not to mention you might not retain that info as well....You know...the old "give a man a fish..."
