Default Name that noise . . . grinding while turning sharp and in reverse. Diff Fluid?

Hi everyone,

So yes, this is a what's that noise post, but it is driving me crazy and instead of throwing a bunch of money away by taking it in, I want to get your thoughts. I am not afraid to climb under my 2012 JKUR and check around, tighten bolts, take parts off that I probably don't need to. I have spent a lot of wrenching time trying to figure it out—I just can't.

Here is what is going on: whenever I am reversing slowly there is a grinding noise that comes from the front of my JK. It seems like it is somewhere under my feet on the underbody. Same noise happens when I have the steering wheel turned all the way clockwise and am going at a really slow speed. I never hear it going faster than like 15 mph. I am pretty sure I had the same exact thing happen in my old XJ.

I am thinking it is the fluid in the differentials/friction modifier that needs to be replaced? I bought it a couple months ago so I am not sure what maintenance the previous owner did.

Anyone else experience this?

Thank you!

Thanks! That is a good one. Anything specific to look for? E.g. stripped metal or signs of rubbing.

Yeah, that is most likely what I am going to have to do. Never tried it before, but now would be a good time to learn how. Needs to happen anyways. Thank you!

You want to check the joints for any excessive play, and check all the caps to make sure there not loose
Or missing the C- Clips.

Easy peezy, Bottom back side of diff there is a drain plug. 3/8" Ratchet fits plug, drain oil then take bolts out of
Diff cover. Usually have to use a flat blade screw driver or flat chisel to pry cover off. There usually stuck on
Pretty good. Then you can inspect ring & pinion and carrier.

Got it. Thanks for the advice! I will probably take a shot at it this weekend.
