Default Need help! Mechanical performance vs safety?

I am in a process of purchasing my first jeep
I didn't like the 2011 interior changes so I am in a hurry to purchase a 2010 Rubi.

My ideal jeep is blue or white, 6 speed manual, side air bags.
Not much left, so I need to compromise between:
6 speed manual with everything beside side air bags
or
Automatic with everything

I'm having a hard time to decide which one to compromise, give up the manual or the air bags...

Vehicle purpose:
1h commuting to work each way on highways, Daily driver, Canadian weather proof. (ton of snow, ice -40c/f)
*light off road trails (will like to go on advanced off road trails one day, but... don't have enough experience/time yet)

My concern
Mechanical performance vs safety?

Is the automatic that different from manual when it comes to snow-ice?
Are the side air bags really needed?

Thank you!!!

That is too much driving on a Jeep IMO. You need a commuter.

I wouldn't have an auto but can see positives and negatives. I see no point in the side air bags since the doors are off most of the time. Side air bags limit seat cover choices and the light stays on when you remove the seats if you get new ones. (There is probably some way to disengage this but it seems a hassle.) Simple is better.

I agree the new interior is horrid.

gonna lift it? Add bigger tires? Plan to do some tough wheeling?

If so - forget the side airbags IMHO... Once you make those changes you change teh effectiveness of side air bags...

It really seems to come down to the side air bags. If you aren't comfortable without them get the automatic. Otherwise get the manual Rubi.

Here are a couple of links to manual vs automatic debates:

Ours is a daily driver. Per the above links since water and mudding is in our Jeeps future I am happy to have an automatic. No side air bags. 15 yo son is learning to drive in this Jeep and I am ok with the lack of side air bags. Just my two centavos

Good luck with your purchase

Skip the side airbags
The Auto vs Manual is a personal preference and I would have the Auto for the city driving and lack of clutch to worry when off roading. Again its a preference thing.

+1 Go with what you want. I enjoy my auto but if I wanted a manual I wouldn't let side air bags stop me (for that matter they were not even a option when I bought mine). Plus you will quickly learn how awesome it is to drive without the doors so then it would be a non issue.
