Default Need some help on basic maintenance

I have done oil changes and diff changes etc. on the jeep before. So no need for a step by step. I can not remember what is done at or around 30k.

Just reached 33k miles, and have already changed the oil about 8 times prior to this. Just changed the diff oil when I got my new solid covers from someone off the forum, thanks!

I have already purchased a Fram 6x oil filter, 6 qts of castrol 5w20 high ,millage oil (says chrysler approved on it) 6 Bosch Double platinum (which actually have four arc towers on each plug) and four qrts of Penzoil ATF+4 for the transfer case.

Need to know what else I need to do? Tranny fluid change if so what details. Do I need plug wires if so recomendations as I would like to get some good ones (maybe in yellow). Just got an alignment at VODIE'S in garden Grove thanks Dave you are awsome!!!

any help would be appreciated.

I would get your oil filter from the dealership. Every oil filter I have had since a stock one made my engine tick on startup finally last oil change I got a stock one again and now no tick. i will never put a diffrent oil fiter in my jeep again. Even though the dealership charges around 15 bucks for one

There is a write up by WOL for the transfer case oil change. With the exception of having to drop a skid plate (easy), it is the same as changing a diff. Takes 2 qts ATF+4. While you are down there you may want to think about adding a zip tie to the t-case shifter.

Changing the auto-tranny fluid (which is really just a partial change) is a bit of a PITA. No drain valve (consider putting one in yourself) so you have to drop a full pan. Potential for a real mess if you're not careful. I haven't done mine yet (only at 16k) and it isn't "called for" until 60k (i think) but you will need ATF+4 and a new filter. Maybe a gasket... anyone know?

I'll be doing mine at 30k, even though I have an aux tranny cooler. These things run pretty hot and heat = bad for tranny fluid.

I assume you've been rotating your tires. Many folks do it when they change their oil.

have fun.

yeah i have read the write up from Eddie on Transfer case that is what inspired me I do rotate tire including the spare. Just more curious about tranny change on an auto and wether wires are needed or not. I am sure this would be a 700.00 service at jeep, but I am into it for 100.00 so far including spark plugs $6.00/per plus $6.00/qt for the transfer case ouch!

I was interested to find that pep boys had $58.00 a piece spark plugs if i wanted them?

Dealers seem to charge retail for parts anyway and instead of buying labor you get to spend the time with your rig!

$6 plugs... must be E3s From what I have read most folks haven't changed plugs unless they were getting a rough idle. And only changed wires if there was a problem like sparking or something.

Are you running rough?

$58 X 6= fail

Thanks for starting this thread. I need to do a 30K work also. I have a 2dr 08 wrangler x.

Diff change seems easy. But what about these two:

http://project-jk.com/jeep-jk-write-...ission-service - What's a NSG-370 manual transmission? Is that just the normal manual tranny in our jeeps? Is this something we should do?

http://project-jk.com/jeep-jk-write-...r-case-service - Should we do this too?

The hardest part of changing out the fluid in your manual tranny is fabricating a tool to get the drain bolt out. The exhaust crossover is located right underneath the drain bolt and there isnt a tool you can buy at a store that will fit in there. Check out wayoflife's write up or search the forum for fabricating ideas. As for your T-Case, if you use 4WD frequently i'd change the fluid for sure.

If you don't have one, I would recommend getting an owner's manual for your year Jeep. It has all of the factory recommendations, plus a lot of other good stuff too.

is there an easy way to check the fluid in the transfer case? I just bought the jeep used, and although it doesnt look like it's been off road at all I'm not totally sure if 4wd has been used frequently or not.
