Default New key- only programable by dealer?

Thinking about getting remote start on the rig, but I hear keys are only programable by dealer, I know on some cars there is way to do it through the radio or a key dance..... Question is- do I drive to the dealer and install the remote start in the parking lot that way I don't have to tow my vehicle to the dealer?!? Then have them cut and program the key. Cause it won't run with the old keys anymore.

Are you installing the factory remote start? If so the old keys will still work. I had mine installed last month and now have four fully functioning keys but can only use the two new ones to start it remotely. That being said you should be able to program the new ones yourself as long as you have the two original keys.

If installing factory remote start, I believe you will need the dealer to turn it on with their scan tool.

Yeah I'm buying the remote start from quadratec.... But I just had a new key fob made. I lost my original. So now I have a grey key and a fob-key..... I'm hoping I can find the other fob-key. Will I still be able to do it with one of each? Or do I have o have two fob-keys?

Not true, you need 2 progamed keys, even to add additional keys. If you have only one key your screwed.

I was referring to installing the factory remote start, and having the dealer turn that function on.
So you're saying if you install the factory remote start, you don't need the dealer at all?

This is from the installation instructions:

Update Vehicle Configuration
1.Vehicle Vin must be updated with the sales code of the added accessory in order to enable system
functionality. Using the DealerCONNECT website and a StarSCAN diagnostic tool, complete the
following procedure:

In some earlier threads, people have confirmed it takes the dealer to activate the remote start feature.

I'm hoping Enzo will come back with anything he knows to the contrary.

You need two fob keys to program any other keys.
