Default Newbie Tire Question

I'm new to Jeeps and an interest in cars in general. They were always just a way to get from point A to point B for me. That being said I don't know S$!T about them. Bought my first JK 2 weeks ago and I think I caught the bug. My ride came with stock 16" wheels and 225/75R/16 tires. I don't have any immediate plans for off roading but want to beef my tires up. I would love some advice on what to invest in and what my Jeep can handle with out a lift. Thanks....

You could go with a set of Rubicon takeoffs. They are 17" wheels that run a larger factory mud terrain tire, and if in the future you decided to go bigger, there are a lot of choices in the 17" size. Check the classifieds on this forum and Craigslist.

It all depends on you future plans. It's nice to plan ahead, saves you money and headache later. Stock take offs are a good option. You could also pick up some aftermarket 15" wheels and 33's. Tires on 15" wheels are significantly cheaper. However, you want to do your research and find a 15" wheel that for sure fits the JK, as some don't clear the break calipers. Also, there aren't many tire choices for 15's if you decide to go larger than a 35" tire.

So riddle me this. My JK is my DD, am I better off leaving the 16's and getting a bigger tire or moving up to a 17 with a bigger tire?

Wheel size won't make a difference, it's the overall diameter of the tire. Like stated above, some tires are cheaper depending on the rim diameter (a 35" tire is cheaper for a 16-17" than an 18").

33s will fit w/o a lift or just find some rubicon takeoffs (17" wheel - 32" tire) or Sahara takeoffs (18" wheel - about 31" tire).

Thank you sir, that makes it easy to understand!

Huh. Wheel size DOES make a difference in the larger scheme of things. A wise man once said that 17s are the sweet spot for JKs. I concur.

I picked up 17 rims on CL for 350.00 wrapped them in toyo open country at2's for 900.00 and I'm happier than a rhino in a mud hole. Tires are 265/70/17 btw. No worries about clearance, noise, or ride quality. Look pretty cool and not much I can't drive thru here in Nebraska...

What is a good (middle of the road on $$) rim. Looking for black, either a 16 or 17. Any issues with getting aftermarkets balanced out right? Aren't they made "loose" enough to fit a couple of different vehicles?
