Default Odometer reading is off

I purchased my JK new in Dec. of '08. I knew that I would upgrade the wheels and tires, so I had the dealer switch out the larger ones on it and put the steel wheels and the smallest tires to save me money. ($1200). Fast forward untill now and I have not replaced the tires, but I noticed my mileage seemed high. Currently I have 24,000 miles on it. I put a GPS in it and realiized that the milage is 10% off. The computer was never changed when they put the small tires on it. I showed them the problem last week and they said that they will fix the computer. Should I be satisfied with this since it took me so long to realize there was a problem, or should I try to get something in writing incase I try to sell the jeep?

I wouldn't worry about the couple thousand miles when you sell the Jeep--that will hardly affect resale value. However, I'd make certain that the error was properly recorded in Chrsyler's computers such that whatever dealer you go to realizes that your 36K mile warranty actually ends at an odometer reading of 38.4K.

I can't see a 10% difference from one stock tire size to a smaller stock tire size. What was on the Jeep from the start and what tire size did you have put on. And most important, the warranty issue. Once you and the dealer can agree on the amount of error, either get it stated on letterhead or even better, have them adjust the odometer to the right figure.

Dumb question, but is it even possible (nevermind legal) to rollback an odometer; a digital one at that?

The dealer would be the only one that could possible reset (not rollback) the cluster legally. It was their error not to re-flash the system in the first place when the wheels were switched. Not saying they would go through all the trouble to do it. The only question I asked was about wheel/tire sizes. With this info anyone with some tire knowledge (including me) can give the OP what percent of error he should be at. He stated it was 10% off, that seems high to me not knowing the sizes involved.

255/75R17 to 225/75R16 would get pretty close. 32.1 versus 29.3 inches.

Thanks for the advice. The Jeep had 255/75R17 and I had the dealership remove them and put on the 225/75R16 to save some money with the thought that I would be replacing them.
