oil change light
Its a pretty good system, way better than going by mileage. Just don't exceed six months or the mileage recommended in your manual for warranty purposes.
(and I would never go more than six months regardless of mileage; my first change was at 700 miles because it had been six months- so I practice what I preach!)

The interval is "duty cycle", an algorithm computes a bunch of parameters and throws the light when certain thresholds are crossed. No measurements of levels or any actual testing of the oil. Nor does the OCI know if you used conventional or synthetic, what quality brand or what grade oil is in there.

The computer does not know when the oil is changed so the light comes on whenever it decides to. I had my oil changed at the dealership at 5k before I took a long trip and the indicator came on just before 6k.
To turn off the indicator perform the following sequence.
Turn key to the run position without starting the engine.
Press the accelerator pedal 3 times within 10 seconds and turn the key off.
If indicator comes on again it failed to reset and sequence should be performed again.
