I think I might have found the problem of my black oil. When I changed my oil last time and it was black I also changed my PCV valve at the same time. Like I said in an earlier post the PCV valve was real loose in the hole when I changed it and the new one was tight after install. I just changed my oil today. Have 6160 miles on the oil with 1 qt added at about 41XX miles. Here is a pic of my oil from today, it is a nice brown color that I expect. This is just info for all and no assurance that it will fix your black oil problem. Just saying.

Someone mentioned avoiding the jeep dealership for oil changes, not sure why. I go to the jeep owners website and get oil change coupons for $19.95. Not a bad price here in Southern California.

I have a full 35 gallon drum, and a half full 55 gallon drum of black oil from a lot of different brands of vehicles.

Now chunky. Chunky can be a problem.
Black or darkened oil by itself doesn't really mean much. Could simply be the add pack doing its job cleaning.
Black oil in combination with other issues or behaviors would tell you more. Any fuel smell in the oil? Drop in mileage, missing coolant, missing oil.... If nothing else seems to be wrong then it probably nothing to worry about.
Kind of like sore muscles. If you have sore muscles because you just exerted yourself then no big deal.
If you have sore muscles for no reason and have a headache, fever, nausea, etc., then you're probably sick.
