Default Oil light vs milage question

I bought my Jeep used from the dealer with around 11,000 miles on it. The oil was changed by the dealership when I bought it. The change oil light comes on with about 400 miles to go before the sticker says the oil needs to be changed. Should I go with the oil change light? and change oil now? or should I wait till I am closer to the mileage on the sticker and change it in a few weeks!

My opinion is do it when you want to do it. If I go on a long ~1000mi one way trip, I'll do it before I go, and when I get back. As far as I know it doesn't hurt it to change it more often.

I have found that my oil change warning will come on randomly, especially since I have to rely on the dealer to remember to reset it. Yes, I did read the manual to figure out how to reset it myself.

Reset the reminder, wait 'til you hit the mileage.

I would be more confident in the light than the dealer saying they changed the oil when it was purchased. With that being said, pull the dip stick and check it out. couple hundred miles either direction won't hurt anything.

There was a TSB on the 08's and the 07's for the chaNge oil light coming on at 2500 miles instead of the 6,000 miles i don't know if that is your problem but i just had mine flashed for that last dealer trip.

x2. The light comes on based on when the computer "thinks" you need an oil change, not by actual mileage or motor oil sensors. Plus, when the oil change is done, the computer is supposed to be reset. If it isn't, then it will come on when it was originally going to because the computer has no way to tell your oil was changed unless it is reset. There is not some sensor in there deciding your oil needs changed. It's a calculation by the computer based on different variables like mileage, stop and go, speeds, etc.

You can reset it yourself. I would have to look in my owners manual to remember exactly how to do it, which is packed right now because I am moving in 2 days, but it's something like....

1) turn key to the engine light coming on, but do not start the egine.
2) push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and back up again slowly 3 times (must take longer than 4 secs but no more than 10 secs of total time for all 3 pushes...I think)
3) turn key off, then start egine..."change oil" sign should be off.

If it does not work the first time, try it a couple of more times. It will work. I did it twice on my 08 X I had.

I think the oil change is done at the 6,000 mile mark for 09 jeeps. I spoke to the jeep folks and they also said 6K, However, my dealership is sneakyyyyy they said every 2-3 thousand miles. Anything for a buck!!!

I switched to Mobil1 at ~800mi. Oil change light came on at ~2500mi. Mine's an '09. Needless to say I just reset it.

The oil sensor is also time based, so if you have not had it reset within 6 months, even if you do not get to the mileage it will come on.

Question Question?

This may be a NOOB question but I have owned my 07 X for almost a year and I have never had this light come on. i change my own oil and have never done a reset. Is this something I need to do every time I change my oil? Or just not worry about it until it comes on?
