I just noticed mine was low. Was getting a knock on startup and checked it out... it was at the bottom of the dipstick. Put about 2 qts in the get it in the safe zone. It has never burned before. Anyone have an idea as to where the PCV is located so I can check it out?

You may also want to poll people about the brand of oil/oil filter they are using. I've had oiling problems in other Jeeps that had nothing to do with the viscocity and everything to do with the brand of oil AND oil filter. they all say they're made to SAE standards but that doesn't really mean much.

I read all these posts about oil usage and wonder if the opposite might be true. My 2007 JK has 84K miles and 99% of that has been highway driving at 65+ MPH. My engine doesn't use a drop of oil between changes.

Can you ask him what the difference is between the two valve covers?

Ford had an issue with the valve covers on their 3.8, the hole underneath where the PCV valve sits was made smaller in the replacements. But that wasn't for an oil consumption issue. It was for too much oil vapor pulling into the rubber hoses and swelling them leading to a lean code. Maybe Chrysler is doing the same with theirs to try to cut down on oil vapor to help with the consumption?

I've been using mob1 5w20 for the past few oil changes and burning about a qt per 1,000mi. Not sure if that specific oil is the culprit. In response to the OP I drive 40mi each way to work so the engine runs at temp for the vast majority of my driving.

Had my jeep in for the fender recall last week and had them put in 5w30 non synthetic. Checked the level as soon as I got home so I have a base level, and I will be checking again after a few hundred miles... Keeping my fingers crossed!

Default Me too: oil consumption

I'm a reader, not a poster, but here goes:
Two oil changes ago I was shocked to see I was down 2 quarts. 6k later and I am using approximately 1 qt/1000 miles. Dealership and Chrysler 'Care' say they consider this normal, as I've seen here on other threads. Was a mechanic for a little over a decade, and this is NOT normal. They put dye in but, other than really slow seepage on the timing cover I don't expect them to find anything. I am aware of the TCB on that part; the dealership says it isn't leaking there, though it is covered in dirty sludge. Huh, must be bugs from the freeway. No drips on the driveway... no (noticeable) smoking. It is going somewhere, though.

I use 5w-20 as recommended, Chrysler filters. Most of the time the dealership does the work. A lot of short trips, occasional long hauls.

Scheduled to have a compression test and leak-down test next oil change or when my back ordered fuel tank comes in, whichever is first. Yeah, I was lucky enough to get one with the puking at fill-up issue, too. Got the letter in the mail. Yay. I'll have them change the PCV while we're at it.

I'm really, really disappointed, as I love my Jeep. Wish me luck finding a warranty-able problem. Anybody got a 55 gallon drum I can mount on the roof?
