Ok, where's the crank start handle and hole to put it thorugh?
Was just looking at a pic of an old Military Jeep and wondering when the crankstarter disappeared, whether it was still an option and how an electronic management computer would feel about fitting one
This is a joke, right? You couldn't turn the Jeep engine over by hand fast enough to start it if you were Hulk Hogan. It's got 9.6:1 compression. Anything with a crank handle had only around 5.1:1. Forget it.

Not only is redneckjeep correct but the system needs to see a pulse from the crank sensor to turn on the spark and the fuel pump and that pulse needs to be something like 300 Rpm or more.
It’s a great idea but a thing of the past we now live in a time of jump boxes and roadside assistance.

Umm yeah it's partially a joke (hence the smiley at the end or did I use the wrong smiley?), but was also interested to see if any Jeep buffs would know when Jeeps stopped having them, as I did have one and use it on my 68 Landrover, and yes it was a low compression engine, my 76 RangeRover was set up for one too but I never got hold of a crank handle to try it.

Another facet of hand crank starting:
It would have to be an engine that would start on a one half revolution pull of the crank. Pushing down on the crank for the second half revolution will break an arm if the engine kicks back. Grabbing the crank with your thumb around it is a bad idea, too.

Also you must be able to manually retard the spark.
Since I have an auto, this is just a question for you 6 speed guys. Can you start your JK's by rolling and popping the clutch?

Hi! I tried it once with zero luck. What in the heck are those engineers thinking? The battery was up I simply stalled it and the opportunity to roll-start it was present. Stupid engineers! All manual tranny equipped vehicles should be capable of roll-starting! Take care... Mike
