I have had to change bits on a boring bar because a block was so hard from seasoning the old fashioned way, it dulled the bit. Rust actually changes the chemical composition of iron. It can be beneficial if you don't let it go too far. Take a look at this: http://www.grapeaperacing.com/GrapeA...gineblocks.pdf
Although it does say to avoid heavily rusted blocks, and explains why, As long as this rust is removed, as per boring the cylinders, ect., it can be beneficial. I've hear Richard Petty and Smokey Yunick both talk favorably about seasoning blocks in this manner.
Interesting... I had no idea! Thanks for the info

I can't help but laugh, my 26 year old son lives 3 hours away, my 33 year old daughter,a metals engineer would do it in a second, but she's 3 hours in the OTHER direction. Hello RUSTY Driveshaft.....

i can see it being one of the things that once you paint it you have to keep painting it. you'll start seeing paint chips and scratches and that wont look good either so it will be time to paint again. Scratched and chipped paint can look as bad as rust in my oppinion.

My old CJ had plenty of rust protection. Pieces fall off, it had some protection.

Little story about dumb car sales people. So I did some pre-research on this before I bought my jk. I noticed all the jk's had this rust on the driveshaft at the dealership. Being a aircraft mechanic, I thought corosion was the devil. My research concluded pretty much what everyone said in this thread, it is ok and helps protect the shafts. However i bought used and said those would have to be replaced or reduce the price or I wouldnt buy. Got my JK a couple bucks cheaper because of it.
