Painting new Mopar half-doors
Hi all,
I'm getting Mopar half doors for my 2012 2dr Sport. Can't wait - should be here Tuesday.
I've been calling around to get quotes on painting them. Quotes are coming in at around $300 per door (solid Black color). Don't really want to budget shop because I want a good job.
Does the price sound about right? I'm thinking I should probably mount and adjust the hinges before I get them painted, but nothing else.
One guy told me that the primer on the doors is called an "e coat" or something like that, and they would need to re-prime them, paint them black, and then put a clear coat over that.
I'm a newbie at this so just checking in to make sure I'm on the right track.

$300 per door sounds high. I paid $350 for the pair to be painted Sahara Tan. I did have the hinges installed and the paint shop took them off to paint them so all the adjusting I did was for nothing. These were re-painted doors as I originally had them on my Red Rock so I'm OK with them removing the hinges to paint over the red. Had to re-adjust them again and they still need a little tweaking but the paint shop did great job.
The first paint shop didn't tell me anything about re-priming the doors and I paid them $350 about 2 years ago for the Red Rock color. Both paint shops did finish off with clear coat and both shops did excellent work. I didn't go back to the first shop because it took them almost 2 months to paint the doors. The second shop had them done in 4 days.
$600 to paint both doors sounds really high to me.

Oh, and I had them paint my hinges separately. This way I knoew they were protected both front and back. There are many threads about rust bubbles forming on the hinge. This is because moisture gets beween the two unpainted surfaces. You just have to be careful when you put them on and adjust the door. I had no issues. Then I used touch up paint for the torx bolts. That isn't holding up perfectly, but I just dab some more touch up paint. It is just a bolt.
