Default Pops Out Of Gear

Ok, I thought it was just me.

We really haven't had the cold weather we usually have since I bought the JK.

I have noticed when it gets colder -5C or colder, I thought I wasn't shifting my 6 speed into gear, tonight I actually put it in 2nd gear and it started going and it physically "popped" out of gear (-9C here now and I felt it pop out as I had my hand near the shifter when it happened).

I have only noticed it in only 2nd or 4th gear and like I said earlier I originally thought I wasn't putting it in gear but it is actually popping out and it only happens for the first 3-4 minutes after leaving my driveway then everything seems to shift ok.

Tonight was the first time I have noticed it happening in 2nd. It used to happen the first time I put it in 4th right after I left my driveway when it was colder.

Any thoughts? Hope it makes sense.

my '93 saab 9000 would do that even after the clutch was replaced (at 180k). Generally, it was because I didn't push the stick all the way in. I know its a whole different car, but i have had that happen on different cars before so it's a possibility.

just a thought.

My TJ has a habbit of doing that too in really cold conditions until things warm up and it's because of the rubber shift boot being so stiff that it's actually enough to pull the lever up and out of gear.

In my TJ, I ended up replacing the shift boot with a soft leather one for $10 from Canadian Tire. The plastic one would get real hard and stiff during the winter and pop it out of 2nd and 4th. After putting in the leather one, no problem. It actually looked better visually too. I'm not sure with the JK though, the odd oval shape of the boot bottom, if a soft leather replacement would even work. If you do try replacing the boot, please keep us Canucks updated for when winter actually comes I'm actually enjoying the + temps for being almost mid-Jan.

Thanks for the tips!! Now I know not to worry about it too much, thought it might be something wrong with the tranny, that's all. Only ever happened when it was below freezing.

As a side note. I have noticed a noise, like a rattling just before changing gears (higher RPM's) which I have found IS the shifter boot.

When the rattling comes, I push down on the oval ring around the shifter boot near the front passenger side and it goes away, when I stop it comes back.

Any thoughts on how to tighten this oval ring surrounding the shifter boot?

No kidding that -5c just looks scary.

Have you had this issue of it popping out of gear while parked?

the reason I'm asking is my driveways on a bit of a hill. My YJ popped out of gear, and hit a damn telephone pole.

Funny you would mention that today. We had a civic in the middle of th parking lot today, in one of the two drive lanes. We thought someone just hoppep out of the car to run in for a quick errand. Nope they are not sure if it poped out of gear or they just forgot to put it in gear. Luck for him the steering wheel was still turned from parking, or he would have been in the lake at the end of the parking lot.

No problems popping out of gear when parked. I leave in neutral with no problems. Just when it's cold and only in 2nd and 4th gear.

-5C was nothing it was -16C this morning with a wind chill of -26C

Supposed to get down to -20C not sure about wind chill tonight.

We usually have -30 to -40C temps at this time of year

You get used to it........................sort of
