Pos engine!!!

I don't understand these complaints from lowlanders. I haven't had any real issues with mine and that is driving around 6000' regularly, and up to 14,110'. On some absurdly steep grades. The engine is adequate given the vehicles purpose, it isn't supposed to be a roadster.
But the issue you had was due to lugging the engine. With an auto, it should not have done that - but the issue isn't the engine. It could be the transmission, but probably not. You probably just got a batch of bad fuel.
I was routinely getting 22mpg on the highway, 18 in the city. Then I started using Costco gas. Slowly over about 15,000 miles, the mileage crept down to 18-19 on the highway, got some 15mpg city tanks. I was thinking the engine was wearing, or maybe my luck had just run out. Then one of the cylinders started misfiring, #2. I took the spark plug out, and the whole bank on the driver side just to look, they were all dirty. I put in some Shell premium and a can of Seafoam, that tank stopped the misfire completely, the engine is running much smoother, and the mileage shot back up to 22mpg highway and 18 in the city. Some gas is just bad.
On my 4cyl TJ it was barely powered, and certain gas stations or gas would give me the exact problem that you had. Usually it would be ok, but always slowing down on hills. Some gas would cause painful slowing on relatively easy hills.
If I were you, I would fill up the next time with some good branded gasoline and put in a can of Seafoam in the tank. Then try the same hill again. I bet you have no problem.
2k in 1st? Hmm How high do you rev it when you offroad? That sounds crazy having to drop you all the way to first, sounds like there might be something wrong do you know what grade the hill was?

)... thanks!
well i am 180 my wife 115 dad 180 mom 150 plus all the gear and stuff, i was going up hill for about 30 min, but then on that steep hill the jeep crap out...
Never had it happen to me, but a few on here have. It seems on many newer vehicles, including the JK, the computer can restrict RPM and/or (in the case of an auto tranny,) lock it in 2nd gear. Supposedly, this was implemented so the vehicle "protects iteself" from damage when one of many sensors is telling it something is wrong. Makes you drive real slow, as in limp. Although, from what I have read, this is usually accompanied by one of the dash warning lights coming on, and a code being stored.
I guess it could also be the ESP, but you said you were on pavement so, mmmm.
Unless it was a heck of a hill and you stopped part way up, you had a heck of a load, or you have some really tall gears/tires, or something else is wrong, getting RPM in first gear should not be a problem on pavement.
Even with the 3.8.
