Default Precautions to keep winch from rusting?

Hello all,

I just installed my Engo 10K winch on my JK and also ordered a cover for it. I decided to run without the cover since it would only be a few days till the cover arrived. I got my cover today and when I went to put it on I noticed that there was already some rust on the Engo!

Thankfully the rust just came off with a little bit of scrubbing but I was wondering if theres a way to prevent this when I have the cover off?

Thought about putting a clear coat on it?

I was going to let mine rust up so it doesn't appear as inviting to thieves.

Hit everything with a little WD-40 or PB Blaster. Don't soak it just hit it with a few shots. Do this every month or so or after using it as the oil will dry up over time. Will keep everything from rusting and is easy to wipe clean. I do this not only to my winch but anywhere under the JK that has a tendancy to rust. Cheap and easy maintainence.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I did put a light coat of WD-40 on the metal parts of my winch before I put the cover on. When all te snow and salt is gone and I take the cover off for the summer I will make sure I re-coat it. Here is the cover I bought off Amazon:

* Rugged Ridge 15102.02 Winch Cover for Rugged Ridge 8,500 and 10,500 lbs. Winches

It fits nice and I restrung it and put it on backwards to hide the Rugged Ridge logo.

I spray mine with Silicon spray every 6 months. Then reinstall the neoprene cover.
Seems to work well.

Use fluid film it's much better then wd-40 especially on electrical connections , lots of jeep people use it as rustproofing
