Stock JK TechBulletin board forum regarding issues with OE (original equipment) components of the Jeep JK Wrangler (Rubicon, Sahara, Unlimited and X) such as factory suspension parts, engine, transmission, body parts, interior fixtures and the on-board computer.
I do have a semi-recessed winch and spotlights on the front but none of that changed between the factory radiator working fine and the O'Rilley radiator not working fine. The air guides are in place. I think it's just a crap radiator.
If the Radiator is not clogged and the stat is opening then try adjusting the fan to turn on lower. I used a Trail dash on my '07 jk.
I set it to turn on at 180* to 60% then 190* to 80% and at 200* 100%. After that never had a issue even at 100*and climbing Cadillac hill on the Rubicon loaded.
Russ- you've got the Jscan though, right? We may have to look and see if there's a setting in there to drop the "on" temps for the fan, that may be enough for you. I don't have it in front of me, but it seems that Motech or AEV added a Camaro fan to their swaps to help with cooling, I wonder if you could do the same.
For the record, I checked tonight and didn't see anything in the Jscan app to adjust this setting. I set out to Google to make sure I was not overlooking something, but it seems maybe that setting it not yet supported. I don't usually drive the jeep to work but it was so nice overnight last week. If I drive it this week, I'll set the fan to high immediately via the BullyDog just to see if that helps or not.
Just to follow up on my "test" since it's relevant to the whole idea here.......drove the jeep to work yesterday. It was about 97* when I left work, which is comparable to what it was last week. I forced the fan on high right after I started the jeep. I have ~28mi drive home, almost all of which is interstate, so running ~2800 rpm or more. I would say that the jeep stayed cooler for much longer, but it did eventually get up over 230*.
I replaced the factory rad with OSC couple years back. I know OSC is cheap alternative, but they sure advertise building to factory specs. I have an OSC in my wife's Armada too with no issues. I don't know.....I sure think the only solution for my particular situation is adding capacity. It's sure a bit of work to replace a non-factory with a factory unit with the chance you might not see any difference at all. Seems like these decisions would be more of a slam dunk of the aluminum rads had a much better track record.
I bought a used Griffin radiator... the guy did an engine swap... got rid of it... It is great for about 3 years that I've owned it... I think it was in the other Jk for 1 year. Seems to cool about the same as stock! I don't know that it would be worth it to buy one new? but it was a great price and has worked great.
We installed the 3rd radiator in our 2014 about 9 months ago and went with a cold case aluminum radiator. It lowered my running temps pretty dramatically. It fits like factory which is more than I can say about the Omix-Ada replacement we installed before it.
Last week our temps ranged between 95 and 100 degrees, my engine temps stayed in the 212 - 214 range running 75 nekked down the highway in moderate winds. City driving it bounces between 199 and 204 (therm opening and closing)
Tulsa elevation is 700 feet.
Sitting still at a stop light temps can climb to 220ish.
In comparison I'd run 220s to 230s under the same conditions with the factory radiator.
2014 JKUR, 100k miles, heavy build running 40" tires. No fan hacks but recently replaced the therm, hoses and coolant.
Quote from Karls "Motech or AEV added a Camaro fan to their swaps to help with cooling".
My Motech conversion does run a new SS Camaro fan as part of the kit with stock rad as the V8 is 5.3. Still have no AC pressure so fan runs full tilt and there is a literal hurricane coming through the rad. I adapted it to the stock rad with very little effort. Made some flatbar brackets, cut a little plastic from the fan housing and used self adhesive high density foam as gap sealer to make all air coming through go via the rad core. And the fan exterior housing dimensions match the Jeep rad. Tranny cooler is between the chassis rails aft of TC. Fan is hellishly expensive at about $699. Don't get it confused with the Camaro standard fan which is way less money. You would need a PWM signal to drive it as it has power to it all the time direct from battery with the PWM signal controlling it on/off and variable speed.

@BlueBaby Are you still doing ok with this radiator? I am looking at the same unit. Website claims it cools much better, and your experience backs that up.
