Default Radiator overflow

I noticed my 08 gurgles a lot lately after I shut it down. It's not overheating as far as I can tell. I popped the hood to check my oil and noticed the overflow bottle was almost ready to the point of spewing. I grabbed the hose that goes to thermostat and it seemed like it had no coolant in the line. A couple squeezes and the overflow bottle started to drain back down to the max level. What is the cause of this? Like I said I haven't noticed any increase in the temp gauge however I will be keeping an eye on this. I changed the water pump August 2014 and flushed refilled the system, that was like 10K miles ago.

Could be a sign of your thermostat sticking closed . Replace it and see if it fixes the problem

A bad radiator cap can cause similar problems.

My cap has had what looks like some leakage, white residue. So thinking if loosing pressure from the cap does it force coolant into overflow rather through the thermostat? Wouldn't I see my temp gauge increase.

The radiator cap allows the cooling system to pressurize up to 18 psi, then lets coolant escape into the overflow bottle. As the engine cools the cap allows the engine to draw water from the overflow bottle. A bad cap can prevent the required pressure buildup, which in turn can allow the coolant to boil into the bottle, possibly overfilling it.

Your problem may or may not be the cap. If you see it leaking, replace it and see if the original problem goes away.

Thanks Ronjenx, I'll try the cap first.

I think any 18 lb. cap that fits will work.
