Default Replacing front transfer case seal

I've had a slow ooze of t-case fluid going on for a year or so. Not enough to worry about, but enough that I want to fix it.

What's the level of effort, for a shade tree mechanic, to replace that seal?

Not too bad. The hardest part is getting the current seal out, it's a pain. It's also much easier to do if you have a 1/2" impact wrench to take the nut off the yoke. Of course, be sure to get the seal aligned straight before tapping it back in. If you have a Harbor Freight close by, they have a seal install kit (don't know what they actually call it) that is VERY helpful for installing the new seal and is pretty cheap.

Found a link to the HF seal driver kit - https://www.harborfreight.com/18-pie...kit-35555.html

Also, the small bolts holding the front driveshaft on are a pain to get out. I used a small boxed end wrench with a piece of pipe slipped over it to get leverage.

Also helps to have an assistant who can shift the transfer case between Neutral and one of the drive gears. This is because you have a bunch of those small bolts on the driveshaft and you'll have to rotate the DS to get to them. Have the assistant put the TC in gear, you loosen the bolts you can get to, assistant puts TC in neutral, you rotate the DS, then assistant puts TC back into gear.

The seal itself is just similar to pinion seal on the diff?

Taking the drive shaft off and the yoke is not a problem. It's an aftermarket driveshaft and yoke from Adams. Which is probably how this got screwed up in the first place. I thought maybe it was just coming from the nut, but I had put RTV on the splines and the nut, so I can't see that being the issue. My guess is it's the seal. But my worry was, do I have to take the t-case out to change the seal or can I do it in place. It's hard to find any reference to it on the inter webs.

I know this is a very old thread but it’s the only reference I’ve found to my issue.
Did you get the seal replaced? Did you have to pull the T-case to do it?
