Default Resurfacing/Machining rotors?

after the ridin this weekend... i noticed grinding. There is a noticable ring my rotor and dude at shop said 11 buck per rotor to resurface.

I already pulled the pads and they pretty well worn at 20K miles. but i have a BIG wheeling trip coming up and dont want to replace anything just yet.

should i have both the rear rotors resurfaced?? or is just doing the bad one okay?

Just the bad one is OK.

You can only have them resurfaced once or twice before they have to be replaced.

It is always best to resurface both rotors on an axle. If you do not, you will probably have a brake pull to one side as the braking coeffient is different from side to side. Have gone a single route and had this happen and wound up doing both sides at the same time.

How sure are you that this is necessary? Are you sure you just don't have some grit up there or something that is causing the grinding?

This may not be the case, but one time in a Ranger that I had, I somehow got a rock wedged between the pad and the rotor and it made a bad grinding noise and gouged my rotor. How bad is the "ring" around the surface of the rotor? If it's not too bad, just drive it untli you get past the next big wheelin' trip and replace everything then.....that's my advice.

the ring is noticeable... but i will let you all in on a secret... after driving around town, dont get out to show the auto shop guy the ring and touch it... apparently... rotors get hot for some reason??!?! really hot...

but to answer the question:

it is definitely a noticable ring. The is a very distinct line on the out pad and (just guessing) the groove is probably at least 1mm - 2mm deep.

Either way, my pads are worn down... the passenger side more so than the driver side... and unevenly worn at that. Resurfacing the rotors is 11 bucks each. Where is everyone getting brake pads?? good deals anywhere??

Wow, new brakes at 20k! Are you hard on them or do a lot of city driving? I didn't do my first brake job on my TJ til like 60K. Hope I don't have to do my JK after only a year of ownership.

I've been using Ceramic Pads from either Auto Zone or Advance Auto for about $50/set...no brake dust, I like that. BTW, it might be a good idea to go ahead and buy 2 new rotors to replace the ones you have....if the one is messed up that bad, then they're gonna have to machine alot more off of it to make it smooth again...and then the 2 won't be even in thickness. Just a thought, I know it's more money but if it were me that's what I'd do. Good Luck!

If you're going on a big wheeling trip, just wait until after, and resurface all 4, and add new pads.
