If you want to know the width in inches. divide by 25.4 or to convert from inches to metric multiply by 25.4

12 x 25.4 =305.0078 so a 305 would be the choice for 12 in wide tire.

Thus a 255/75R17 is 255mm wide (or 10" when you divide 255 by 25.4 millimeters/inch). Sidewall is 75% of 10", so 7.5". Rim is 17", so total height would be 17 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 32".

To figure out a 12" wide 33" tire just go in reverse. 12 x 25.4 is about 305mm, and to get 33" on a 17" rim you need 8" sidewalls; 8/12 = 67%. To meet your desired dimensions you'd want to find something like a 305/65R17 or 305/70R17.

Pretty elementary once you know what the tire codes mean.
However, it doesn't properly compute what the total diameter is once weight is applied to the vehicle. My "32 inch" Rubi tires required a nominal 30.75" to give an accurate diameter. The un-weighted diameter is 32", but put the weight of the Jeep on it and there's another story. It's best to take the nominal diameter and do an accurate circumference test to make sure you have the right calibration.

Tire codes get you in the ball park. Accurate measurements are needed if you want to recalibrate so you don't add unnecessary mileage to your Jeep.
