Default Shifting on 2014 JKUR question???

I'll start of by saying that I'm NO car genius, especially when it comes to manual transmissions. I own a 2010 JKS (manual trans and first manual I've ever owned) and just purchased a 2014 JKUR (manual trans). What's the reason for the different shift points in the two cars? When I'm driving the 2010 I can easily do 70mph in 5th gear on the expressway and usually keep it in 3rd or 4th on surface streets. The 2014, which has the new engine, needs to be shifted much more often into a higher gear. What is the reason for this? Is it because the gear ratio is different in the Rubicon? Or because the Rubicon is heavier? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just curious. Thanks for the help!

Completely different animal. Different gearing and a whole lot more power. You don't need to wind it out as much as the old engine.

Default 410 gearing

youl get used to shifting fast lol usualy you shift into 3rd gear by the time you get to other side of traffic light and holding up traffic but I ignore them I have 410s and I realy don't care about their rush . yeh so that's why their different better of road when you need them . I believe the automatics arnt as bad but I still would rather have a 6 speed with 410s
rubicons have 410 gears / just a bit better gearing for off roading than the 3.73 or 3.21 gearing in a sport or sahara

The 4.10 gears make a big difference. The transmission ratios might be different as well, still have't gotten around to looking into those.

Maybe it is just me, but I have noticed the shifts are a lot smoother with the traction control switched off. Like I said it might just be me. I also am not a fan of the traction control at all. I really wish the switch was wired the other way, that way I could turn it on on the rare occasion that I want it (possibly on ice) rather than having to hit the button every time I start the Jeep.

Sorry, wasn't trying to thread jack. It is good to hear of others with the manual. I think we a pretty few and far between. Happy Jeeping!

I was starting to wonder why I was lagging so far behind in traffic, but it makes sense now. I just thought I was an amateur at shifting!!!

No worries about thread jacking. I'm no expert, so any input I get is appreciated. But to be honest, I constantly see manual wranglers. The dealership I bought mine from is the biggest in a 5 state region. They usually keep 45-50 wranglers in stock and I'd say about 70% are manuals. I'll keep that in mind about the traction control and see if it works.

Sorry for the delay in response. Hadn't seen the reply. That's crazy about that many manual wranglers! I had been looking in Texas, and couldn't find any near me. Then I ended up picking it while on project in NW Florida. They had brought it up from Miami, cause it was the nearest one around at the time.

hmmm got me thinking now , I noticed it grabs when on snowy surface I didn't care for that , but I suppose it could save you in a situation , personaly I think the shifts are awfuly close on 410s I constantly have people up my @zz when im trying to hit second or third they are like oh well you cant blow your engine so people can speed if you were doin 40 they want 60 , you do 60 they want 80 their jeeps not hot rods . I notice they don't likedriving behind me either even when im speeding . I think the jeeps block their view of how fast they could go if I wasnt there I always feel like im being chased home , never felt that way in my trucks

Yeah, I don't think it matters have fast I go people are really on my a$$. I usually downshift before I break, unless it is a real emergency, so my break lights don't always come on when I first start slowing down.

They really don't like when I drop it down from 6th to 4th just to scare them. It's not that I'm trying to be a jerk, I just really can't stand people riding my tail.

Just bought a 2012 Rubicon with the 6 speed manual. My wife and I decided on the 6 speed simply due to the fact that we wanted the Jeep to be fun to drive. She drives a new QX56 and I have a 2014 Dodge Ram so it is not our daily driver. When I get in it, my only thought is to enjoy the ride. The other people can kiss my @$$. I get compliments all the time on the Jeep.
