Default Shifting from 2H to 4H

Hi

What is the proper way to shift from 2H to 4H in a automatic. The manual doesn't mention what position the transmission shifter should be in.

I put the transmission shifter in N and then I shift from 2H to 4H and then shift the transmission into Reverse or Drive.

Is that the correct way to do it??? Can I shift into 4H with the transmission being already in Reverse or Drive??

Also how bad is it really to drive in 4H during the snowy winter months.

Thanks

You can "shift on the fly" going from 2wd to 4wd HI or vice-versa...just do it below 55mph I think. The only time you need to shift into nuetral is going in to or out of 4wd LO, shift to nuetral and come to a stop.

i dont think you can do "on the fly" with the auto. I dont think the tranny would do well going into the N, shifting the lever and then poping back into D. With a manual its a little diffrent. I found with the auto come to a stop or slow roll then go into N and shift it. I also found it was harder to do with my foot on the brake pedal but if I am on a hill and cant roll forward or backward much the E-brake seems to do better

That's odd, I didn't realize the auto would be different.....why is that?

The stored torque will be brutal on he drive train if you go to neutral. Stay in drive or reverse, slightly let up on the power and shift. with a firm steady shift then you can roll back into the gas.

so r u saying its worse on the Jeep to be at a dead stop and going into Neutral than it is to be moving and engage 4wd?

The manual tells you to simply let your foot off the gas and pull the lever into 4h. There's nothing else to it! No need to shift into N. No need to come to a stop. All you need to do is be under 55mph. Shifting into 4L.... that's a little more involved.

i checked the Jeep website and it does seem you are correct. I learned something new tonight. I guess thinking about it now, i dont really use 4H because I play on the rocks but the few times ive used it ive done the stop, N and shift like you are supose to do going into 4L. Now i Know!
