Default Smoked lights illegal

Smoked Tail lights are illegal in Illinois and Wisconsin. It hinders the light output.
I like the looks though.

Anybody know if it's illegal in California? I've seen it done on other cars around town, but that doesn't mean they don't get pulled over for it. We've got so many restrictions here I can't keep them all straight

Default Smoked tail lights

All tail lights must be visible for 500 feet and have a red tint to them . I am a Cop and tinted mine what I did was to tint them at night pre-prep your tail lights during the day then tint them at night . look in between coats and if they look to dark then let dry and sand a little till they are bright enuff . Be honest with yourself when you are judging if they are bright enuff , because if you have any doubts you could get a ticket. Basic rule no when to say when LOL.

I haven't been pulled over...yet. I had the same thoughts you had with regards to tickets. Like SWAT524 said use your best judgement. Be prepared for consequences. If they are too dark and you get a fix it ticket, be prepared to strip them or replace the tail lights.

Hey guys, my first post here, thought i'd add to this thread as i just did a tint job on my taillights on my 2010 rubi unlimited. I've had it less than a week and so far i LOVE it. This VHT method is a great way to add some nice tint to your lights. I did a little bit of sanding with 2000 grit sandpaper, but it is kinda wonky on the taillights because of how grooved and bumpy the taillights are, but im sure it helped the paint stick. I bought clear coat but didn't use it as i found that it looked decent with just the VHT on it. I might go darker in the future, but for now im pretty please how it turned out. Check it out and let me know what ya think!

Masked off and ready for paint:
I masked off the ring around the light as it is the reflective portion of the light and i wanted that to remain as reflective as possible for safety reasons.

Shot of the side masking:

After paint:
I also smoked the third brake light as well, which i think turned out great.

Back on the jeep after paint:
I forgot to take a pic of the jeep before, DOH!

Running lights on:

Brake lights on:

Reverse lights on:

Outside in the dark:

My future plans are to smoke the front yellow turn signals and side markers, which is where i think the clear coat will make a much better difference.

I'm sure it's just me, but I hate smoked tailights or headlights for that matter.

I personally want TO BE SEEN when I apply the brakes, and smoked tailights definitely make them dimmer.

I have seen vehicles with smoked tailights so dark, that when the brakes are on, the tailights are barely visible in the daytime.

Legal or illegal, depending on your state, smoked lights (even a little smoked) just don't make SAFETY sense to me.
