Default soft top to hard top

I purchased my X with the soft top only option. If somewhere down the line I decide to purchase a hard top, is it difficult to wire the rear defroster??

Mine as at the dealership as I type this. It is no small task.

I purchased with soft top only and part of the deal was that they would install the hard top for me.

The top itself is no big deal, but the wiring is a 4+ hour job. It includes the complete replacement of the three dial HVAC controls as well as a new washer / wiper stalk off the steering wheel.
The wiring harness and washer tubing is run from the engine compartment, to the new controls, back to the rear connector.
Then the dealer has to re-flash the ECU to accept the new controls.

I'll let you know how mine came out later today, I hope.
I've been nervous about the whole ordeal since I dropped the Jeep off earlier this morning.

Thx Jetsfan

Keep us in the loop. Chances are I'll go for an after market top without the rear defroster or buy a second hand freedom top and just not hook it up

I'll report on the status later today, hopefully.
Funny thing is, I plan to take the hard top back off as soon as I get the Jeep back home. Can't be tooling around in a hardtop on days like today!

I grew up with season tix, Dad still has em, sec 213 I think. Now, if you ever wanna sell a game or two....let me know....

Heck no.
I think the dealer is charging $2500 with installation.
(In my case they are eating it becuase of the salesman).

Give it a few months and I am sure you will find aftermarket and OEM hardtops all over.... now that wiring is a different story.

OK...the saga begins as I feared....
I called to check status and the service writer says that it is a bigger job than they anticipated and it will not be ready today. Lucky me, I have a loaner PT Cruiser i get to drive. To be continued....

My JK came with a hard top and I can say whenever I do put the top back on, I never hook up the harness for the defroster and wiper. Just never use it. When I added a hard top on my last Wrangler I never had it wired and never really missed the defroster or wiper.

In NY it is law that you must have a rear defroster / defogger. No choice here.

Then how does that work with a soft top or no top?
