Default Soft Top Replacement

Hi Everyone-

I am getting a bit paranoid please offer your thoughts...

Two months after I got my JK Unlimited X I noticed a small tear in the corner of the top by the rear window. Not huge but big enough to make me worry with only 3,000 miles on it. I took it to the dealer and they did the picture to DC process, and got approval for a new top! So, next week it goes to the dealer for the replacement top to be put on. I have been using the softtop weekly and it has been working fine..no leaks etc.

My paranoia: I called the dealer to see how long they thought it would take and they said...."I can't promise in half a day as we have had some problems getting the softtop to fit" (or something like that).

I am afraid that when they put the softtop on, it will leak (which it never did) or won't fit properly. Please tell me I just being paranoid!

The only thing I can think is that maybe the softtop didn't come with the frame and they are using the existing frame? Any thoughts welcomed.

I would not worry - first time all soft tops go on they are tough to fit. Once in the sun they "relax" a bit are are much easier.

Thanks Fireplace. My gut is agreeing with you but there is still that slight worry in the back of my head anytime my JK goes to the dealer.

I'll 2nd Fireplace on that. I just got a new soft top and put it on yesterday. It was a bit of a bugger to get on as everything is really tight. Better to have it that way and loosen up a little as the fabric relaxes than to have it be too loose!

That does make alot of sense, but shouldn't a dealer know that and say it, not jus that "it might take more than a half day"? Oh Wait...it is the dealer we are talking about here, what was I thinking.

Anyway...tomorrow is the day, keeping my fingers crossed I am not there from dawn to dusk!

I replaced my soft top on my old YJ twice. Found it went much better when I set the new top out in the hot sun before installation. Why 2 new tops? Tree branches, when 4 wheeling, do a number on them. Better to have the top up than spiders or snakes dropping in your lap. Don't laugh, I've see it happen!

Because it was under warranty they wouldn't let me just take the new top. All in all it only took them an hour to get that done. Of course, it has been so nice here I haven't put the top up yet and probably won't till the weekend. I could be in a for a big surprise if it won't secure down properly once raised .

On a side note for same topic...since I brought it in with the top down that is how they gave it back to me. I watched them put the top down they didn't even try to make half the folds So I went out there and in 5 minutes put it up to unfold it and then put it down correctly. They also had a new 2door on the lot with the top down for show and it was a mess. Dealers should take classes on this stuff.

We, too, found a tear at the seem of our soft top on the top passenger side. We took it to our dealer and they replaced it. I'm not sure why, but it took most of the day to get it done. And, it didn't fit real well at first but, over time, it fit better and we've never had a leak in the old or new soft top.
