Spare Tire Mount
Let me start by saying, I'm not an idiot, and have not cross threaded anything since I was 20 years old, I'm 42. My Rubi hit 4200 miles last weekend so I decided it was time to rotate the BFG's. I got all the way around (5 tire rotation) and was putting the left over tire back on the spare mount, and the bottom lug nut didn't feel right going on. I've never had the spare off until now. I swapped that lug nut with one of the other 2 and it felt wrong going on too. I think now it was cross threaded at the factory, but it's too late. I tried several times to get it on mostly by hand, and got the nut half way on, I figured pressure from the rim itself was keeping it from going all the way, so I applied the 4 way lug wrench. I didn't have any of the other nuts tight very tight yet. I notice it's not centered in the rim, and it's fairly tight by now, so I went to take it off. The stud unscrewed from the spare tire mount! And it was stuck in my rim! I could not get the nut back off It's 2 different threads seperated by a 3/8" thick collar approx 3/4" in diameter. 1 side of the stud is threaded for lug nuts, the other side where it goes into spare tire mount is 1/2-13 threads. You cannot buy this stud from Moparpartsamerica, you can only get the entire spare tire mount, 3rd brake light and all, $157. $%&@ that, I had a master machinist friend make a lug nut that's round, not hex sided, with the same 60° conical end out of stainelss steel. It has a hole thru it just large enough to pass a 3 inch, 1/2-13 thread, grade 8 shoulder bolt, which incidentally has a head the same size as my lug nut, so the lug wrench fits it. This is holding the bottom hole of my spare on.
I had to grind the collar on the original stud down to get it out of my damned rim. I then put it in a vice and tried to get the lug nut off, and it's still on there.
So my first tire rotation, which should have been a 45 min. affair, max, turned into two days.
