Default Steering Stabilizer Leak?

I'm looking for some insight/advice on this - after some (light) wheeling this weekend, I noticed a leak under my Jeep. It is coming from the steering stabilizer/shock. I looked all around and I am pretty certain that it's coming from the shock. I didn't rag on it that bad this weekend and I'm a bit curious and concerned as to how this could have happened?

So, anyway it happened. My next question is - what should I replace it with? I noticed there are several brands - Skyjacker, Fox Racing (pretty pricey at $150), OME, etc... The current Jeep configuration is all stock though I will likely be upping to 35's on a 2.5" TF coil lift. I guess what I'm getting at is I don't mind paying extra for higher quality/stronger/etc...

Any advice?

Ok, thanks for the tip. I guess I just wanted to hear that it's (somewhat) normal. My tires are stock 32 BFG's (Rubicon OE) however I do have a very tight turn into (and out of) my garage and it does require a good amount of turning the wheels while not moving (typically a 3 point turn/park with the second "point" being while still). I realize that turning while stopped may be a little stressful but jeeeez - leaking after only 12,000 miles!? I'm wondering if I could have konked it on something (the konk might be disguised by the mud coating)..

So I guess I'll throw another one on.. I like the Fox racing stabilizer but $150 seems a bit steep, considering the average is right around $50...

I just put the Teraflex one on this weekend. I noticed the difference over stock right away. It sure feels smoother. Could be because its almost twice the size of the dinky stock unit. Its about a 15 minute job. Why pay $150 for something that you may damage easily on your next wheeling trip?

I think you're right. I just liked the look of the Fox Racing one.. Heheh.. Also, I don't mind paying extra for some benefit - but you're right, I could just screw it up again.. I think my first (replacement) will just be a quick/cheap(er) TF or SkyJacker...

do a search... there is a long thread about leaking Steering stablizers. There is some sort of a recall evidently, but I don't have info on that.

Mine blew it's seal about a month ago. I too just replaced with a Tera Flex 9550 and am very happy with the difference. Good luck.

Whether you dinged it trailing or got hit by a chucked stone on the highway or even abraded away the cylinder/piston seal it's toast.
No need to overspend on a replacement.
They're on there for suspension geometrics and normally the stock replacement is just fine.
However you can't go wrong getting a slightly better one by shopping with the same dollars the dealer would rob you of.

Thanks Yippie and Gargoyles... Sounds like good advice.. I guess I really wanted to hear exactly what you said - it is a known issue.. I may upgrade to a higher-end model later on but I think I'm going to keep it simple - either a TF or the SJ.. Thanks again!

Looks like its twisted back a little bit from the trail. If you spend the money on aftermarket I'd suggest relocating so it doesn't get hit again.

That could very well be... I'll get a better look after I get all the mud off..
