Question Stock Engine Pinging....Normal???

I have noticed almost every day lately that if I get on the throttle when there is a slight hill in lower gears around 2500 rpms, I can get it to ping almost at will. This is on a 2010 with 10K miles. I always run non-ethanol 87 regular fuel. I have tried a few different stations with all the same results (I think most of the fuel here in ND comes from one maybe two distributors). I really hate to think I need to run more then 87 octane here in ND.

The manual states occasional pinging is normal. Is that the case?

The jeep returns great MPG, seems to have great power (as great as a stock 3.8). Have never seen a engine light or any hint of engine issues.

I hate to take it to the dealership if this is perfectly normal.

It should run fine on 87. My 10 has no problems with it. But, have you tried a tank of 89 to see if it still pings? I would try that at least once before taking it in. If it still does it I would try one tank of 92 or 93. Now if it still pings, take it in. There could be a timing issue. Even at 10,000 sometimes depending on the fuel available it could cause carbon deposits that might cause this. One thing I do know is that if you've been running non major brand/no name fuel or Exxon, that could be your problem. Their 87 rating might not be quite 87. And, it could be as simple as the elevation you're operating in.

Have you been offroad in mud? If the o2 sensors get covered in mud they can't read the air fuel mixture correctly and that could cause something like you are seeing. If you have air getting into the engine that hasn't been measured by the maf sensor that might also cause that. Too much air and not enough fuel leads to pinging because that makes it lean. Well anyway those are some things you can look at.

Take it in. That's why you have a warranty. Your engine shouldn't be pinning that much.....imo.

No normal.... mine never pinged stock... with the superchips tune that is a different story.

I now run the towing tune with 89 octane and no pinging. I would bring it in...

Also just for good measure check your MAP sensor on your intake just make sure its not covered by a leaf or something...

I saw another post somewhere that mentioned there was a fueling issue with the injectors that chrysler was aware of. If that is true there should be an update for your pcm to correct that, it was pertaining to 2010 engines so very well could apply to you.

There is no update yet, mine pings with 93 octane.
Just got off the phone with Chrysler, nothing they can do.
I have been waiting for 1 year and 1 month for a fix,but nothing.
I am so f...... fed up.
