Without lockers driver skill plays a much more important role. I have been wheeling several times now with a guy who has an old junkyard (literally) CJ7 with open diffs. the first time we had to strap and winch him through everything. The last time we went to the same trail (Calico, CA) his driving skills had so improved that he drove through almost everything the rest of us did. He had to take a few stabs at a few obstacles, took a few bypasses and did more bumping and grinding but he made it. I know I was impressed, and it was all driver.
You learn how to use momentum and how to keep all 4 tires on the ground.
That said, a set of Aussie lockers are cheap and easy to install and will let you go anywhere with ease. Well worth it.

I´ve never had to turn back from trails that rigs with locks go through. Sometimes it takes some thought to make it. JK´s ETC system is able to handle most of it with ease.
Add agressive tires and a winch then go with others. At the end you might end up thinking like me: why to pay so much more to have locks. Only on a soft sand they do make a difference, sometimes. But not enough for me to justify that extra cost and vulnerability. IMO.

I will attest to the fact that the JK - X with an Aggressive ( Mickey MTZ ) will go any where and do anything the stock 2006 TJ Rubicon can !!
I have personally done it ...... and man was it fun !
