Strange Whirring Noise When Turning - Please Help!
Hi all,
I have a strange noise coming from my 2016 JK Sport with an automatic transmission. I bought it only a few months ago and it has about 1750 miles on it.
Here's a link to the video on youtube, because the video is too large to attach here: https://youtu.be/G47FrF_aLiI
The sound in question happens when I turn the wheel to either side, and is most noticeable moving very slowly and when I'm stopped with the Jeep in drive or reverse (not in P or N). I've taken it to the dealer 3 times and they've replaced the water pump pulley, tightened an unspecified heat shield, and finally told me that they cannot and will not diagnose the problem because it is not consistently reproducible.
I've spent hours combing the internet for a similar noise but can't find a video that captures the same sound. I've also spent a lot of time under the jeep tapping/wiggling/listening/staring at things hoping to find the problem. Nothing that I can reach is loose.
When I'm under the jeep, the sound seems to be most prominent from the passenger side near the belt, but as far as I can tell, the belt is in good condition and the pulleys are not wobbling.
Is anyone else having the same problem?
Thanks in advance for any advice!

That's not an acceptable response from a dealer regarding a jeep that has 1700 miles on it! The sound is only happening from time to time? Sounds like you reproduced it pretty well in that video, but they can't reproduce it regularly? If it doesn't happen in P or N, it seems that it wouldn't be belt or pully related since those are all turning regardless of what gear you're in. Same for anything in the power steering system....seems like that would make a noise regardless of if parked and turning the wheel or doing so while in motion. If that were me I'd be back at the dealership throwing a stink....and working up the chain of command. Sorry you're off to a rough start with the jeep.

Thanks man.
I took my Jeep to the dealer where I bought it a day or two after my first post and just got it back. Although it took two weeks, they were able to find the source of this noise and another. It was apparently a very hard sound to find.
This one was fixed by re positioning a heat shield on the catalytic converter. I have only driven it once since getting it back, but the noise seemed to be gone. I'm hoping the fix will last.
There was another, similar but higher-pitched sound that also happened under the same circumstances, but which was not nearly as loud or annoying. You can kind of hear it in the video, but it's pretty soft. This one was due to the tube that the transmission fluid dipstick lives in rattling under certain load conditions. They installed a rubber grommet to quiet it and it seems to have gone away as well.
Hope this is helpful to anyone who hears this nonsense in the future.
