Default tab next to the OD off button on automatics

Does anybody know what that plastic tab is for to the right of the O/D off button on the automatics. I'm guessing it's for some option that i didn't get.
Just curious, is it there on the 6 speeds too?
... looks like a MOD waiting to happen.

Its a shift lock release....you pop the plastic piece out and then you use a key or screwdriver and push the button inside the hole and then you can move the shifter.....it is mainly used by tow truck drivers when the keys aren't available

I tried doing just that yesterday and it wouldn't work. I was pulling the center part of the dash up to hardwire my GPS.

It says after you do it to have it serviced. But that is probably if you had to do it! Because the interlock was not wrking.

Exactly. And as a towtruck driver, I thank jeep for these. The imports are pretty good for having them too, but man, ford has to get its shit together. I know some new Focus's have them now but I cant count how many Fords ive had to drag backwards out of peoples garages when the ignition piles up.
