I'm not too sure what the problem is yet. Yes the problem still exists. I do however have an appointment with the service department to have them check it out on Friday. I should know more then.

Well I took it in...and after letting it sit idle for awhile, the gauge only rose to the second line past center and held there. The service person said that it should be fine, but if it actually goes into the red, overheats and a check engine light comes on, then they can go in and check the computer to see whats happening. So maybe it just idles a little hot? And I over reacted? BTW the fan does seem to work. I'm gonna watch it like a hawk. And I hope it never actually overheats while out on a trail.

Update - Actually this news is a little old. But because of a totally unrelated issue my problem has finally been solved. A few weeks ago my battery took a crap on me (used cars. meh). And I had to get a replacement from the AAA battery guy. Anyway, as we were installing the new battery I noticed some coolant leakage around the thermostat housing. I took it back to the shop, they did a pressure test (because they don't seem to take my word on anything) and lo and behold I needed a new housing. This was of course the cause of my temp gauge fluctuation. Since the repair I haven't had any trouble, my fan doesn't seem to come on as much, and overall (real or imagined) I think my jeep runs better. Thanks for all your replies. Onward to my next topic...Seeking a decent Jeep mechanic in The SGV.
