Then all of a sudden there was nothing...
nope... Wasn't moving. Put the transmission in neutral and proceeded to shift it back to 2wd as usual... Absolutely no warning or indicators... Felt like normal operation until.... Snap! Design flaw i think but nice when it works.... Could've been worse... Alot worse!
Nope the clevis isn't removeable it's a swagged/riveted/pressed on pin on the t-case lever unfortunately. Probably have to leave it well enough alone and stock up on the clips, pain in the ass but cheaper than weakening the pin assy and having that fail... You're right.
Yes my fellow cannucker.... Buy some extras and throw em in the glove box.... Might not ever need them but for the dollar and change they cost and piece of mind if it does fail.... Stock up on a few, i am!

That bites! My first car was an '83 CJ-7 Renegade (yes, wish I still had it) that I sold in 1995. I just recently decided to give in to my longing for another Jeep so I picked up an '09 Rubicon. As delivered from the dealer the vehicle had the same problem. The 4 wheel drive shift lever felt like it was not connected to anything and did absolutely nothing. At first I was wondering what I was doing wrong...almost wanted to see if I needed to get out and engage the locks on the 2 front wheels like on my '83.
Anyway, took the car in for service and as soon as I explained the problem the service tech just started shaking his head as if to say "not this again". I have to admit I was a little worried about build quality at that point since my '83, though it leaked oil everywhere I went, was otherwise built like a tank. But happy to say that after getting the Jeep back all seems well and I'm no longer the owner of a 2wd only Rubicon.

:rotfl mao2:
its a jeep not a car just so you know
There are five pages of blather about this problem, but no photo or drawing of the "clip", no part number(s), or other description that can direct anyone to find the part. What is it and what does it look like? Dimensions anyone?
Look on the writeup on adding the 2Lo option to the Rock Crawler transfer case. Plenty of pictures in there. It's just a C clip on a shaft like you've seen millions of times if you've ever worked on a car. The shaft diameter it goes on is 1/4" on the shaft body and 3/16" measured in the clip groove.
EDIT - I thought the write up for the Tera 2Lo kit for the NP231 was here on this site, but I can't find it in the index. I must have seen it elsewhere, and can't find a bookmark for it. If anyone else recalls where that very detailed writeup is hosted, please post a link.

Mine broke a couple of weeks ago. I sourced a bronze bush ID 8mm OD 12 mm, cut about 5mm off and slid into one side of the cable end loop, tapered another 5mm of bushing and set in other side of loop. A washer then two M6 e clips cinched down a bit to fit snug and rotated so openings are not lined up. Pretty sure will work well and if the dealer tries to replace with plastic I'll tell them not to worry
