Default Third brake light post - what is it made of?

Does anyone know what the post for the third brake light is made out of? Tapping on and feeling it, I cannot tell if it is plastic or metal. I am thinking of using it to mount a horizontal piece of square tube and then use the square tube to hold up rear work/backup lights. Before I start buying the parts and drilling holes I want to know what I am working with, but as crazy as it seems, I cannot tell what the post is made out of. My original thought was plastic, but I am thinking it is some light metal.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Paul

The curved bit is some sort of metal as I've worn slightly through the paint with by rear recovery strap bracket.

It looks to me that the tire carrier and brake light post is all one piece cast Aluminum.

The tire carrier and extension for the CHMSL are a metal alloy , like die-cast aluminium The light and its plastic stalk comes off with the removal of 4 Torx screws. The alloy is easy to cut , a hacksaw or thin metal cutting disc will do the job. Don't forget to move the wiring harness out of harms way.

It's cast aluminum. Found that out when I cut mine down so that the light sits low and inside the wheel.
