Default Tow hook or hitch

I have no recovery points on the rear of my jeep. I don't do crazy off road and my jk is stock. I'm looking for something that I can pull people out of snow banks or pull me out of a snow bank or mud. I don't tow anything but thought it might be good to have just in case. Thoughts on what I should get

If you do a hitch then you can just slip the strap into the hitch and put a pin through it. Personally, I do that or just toss the strap on the ball. Caution....the ball could become a projectile.

I don't like the factory tow hook because it only allowed to be pulled (or pull) from the driver's side. Any crazy extreme hardcore pulling should NOT be done from the hitch as it is merely a crossmember and not tied into the frame. That's why the tow hook now comes bolted to the framerail.

I've since upgraded to a bumper with proper shackle mount tabs in the rear but still find myself pulling from the hitch. Bad habit I suppose.

just keep and eye out for a stock hitch "take off". you can find them from free to $40 bucks.

they just get one of these hitch adapters.
this would be the safest way. Click image for larger version

I would go with the hitch. You might want to tow something one day. Like it was said above, just run the pin thru the loop of the strap and it makes a great recovery point.

x2 - That's what I use and have used to pull and be pulled. Works well.

I was thinking of going with the hitch but I kept reading about how it's tied into the Crossmember and how they are against it. I'm not doing anything extreme or all that often I should be fine right?

Cool Options

Life is all about options, the more you have the more you can do. Go with a hitch. Not only will you be able to tow folks out of a ditch but you will be able to install a cargo carrier or bike rack or ski rack or even a "Trail D-Vise" that is an actual working well made vise. You won't get any of the capability with a tow hook. A hitch is the answer.

the rear towhook is on the same crossmember as the trailer hitch bolts to..

infact on the older jk's you had to remove the tow hook (used to be in the center) to install a trailer hitch.

I've personally seen two different ball mounts come off. One went though the windshield and hit the driver. Do not pull hard on them.

What is the crossmember attached too then?

Hitch, receiver, and shackle....already pictured above. That's what I've used and it works very well. Pulling from the center seems like a better idea than just the driver's side.
