Default towing.....the true answer

OK..i did search but confused and many posts.... so i am going across country ( moving to Colorado from PA) and i will need to tow an enclosed Uhaul trailer. (yes i know uhaul wont rent to a soft top SUV) I have the mopar hitch...i just need a wiring harness. I know there is a 4 pin and a 7 pin. i know nothing about towing so....this will be a one time tow out to my new town.

1) what pin harness do i need?
2)do i need any flashes when installing said wiring harness
3) do i need to change my rear fluid?

i have a 2dr auto with 4.10's. I am going with 2klbs tow rating. The trailer weighs 900lbs unloaded. bike weighs 400lbs = thats 1300lbs plus i need to load a small table and sdome boxes of clothes and mt bike etc...i thinking this rig wont be able to do it properly. I was told before i bought it that it would tow 3500lbs but found out that for a limited only. I freakin uhaul truck and trailer to tow the jk is $2k!!!!

thanks guys/gals!

1. 4
2. No
3. No

I tow a lot and the 4.10 will do fine.
Get the mopar wire harness if you want to eliminate any wiring quesswork.
4 pin will most likely hook to the Uhaul wiring connector, but if not you can get an adapter for cheap at any autoparts establishment.

The chances are that U Haul uses 4 pin connectors on their trailers. You can install a 4 pin without a computer flash, but I think I read that you need a computer flash with a 7 pin.

I haven't rented a Uhaul in a few years, but they used to use a proprietary connector so that if you were already wired you had to buy an adapter (from them) in order to rent their trailer. Pretty shitty way of doing business if you ask me. Maybe they have changed but I doubt it.

That is pretty shitty. Well, it has been a long time since I rented from them too and don't remember what they used. I just figured a 4 pin, because that is the most standard for small trailers.

I don't know what the flash would do for a 7 pin harness. I never did the "needed" flash on my 2005 Unlimited. I did some research and I read in quite a few places all the "flash" did was note Jeep service computers with the fact thaqt you are towing large trailers with your Jeep.

The 7 pin includes a rarely used charging circuit, an even less used auxiliary circuit, and a brake circuit that is run off a brake controller of your choice. The charging circuit is useful if your trailer has breakaway braking.

yeah, i was still in college when i last towed a uhaul, but it was their own connectors on the electrics... and good luck dude, that's a long way!

I pulled one from VA to ME to MO one summer with a 96 Discovery... that was the END of that truck. it never drove the same after all that.

dont let anyone see you do it and do it at your own risk, but just get a 17' or 24' Uhaul and put the JK in the rear with your bike.

more seriously, where is the $2K cost coming from? I've used a Uhaul and pulled a truck on a dolly and didnt cost anywhere near that much.

Be careful with uhaul trailers. They rarely do maintence and have lead to dangerous accidents. Just look things over cfarefully. Good luck on your trip.

it cost $1600 just for a 10' truck one way and $300+ for the car "transporter". Thats not even including gas of course. When my GF moved up from Orlando to PA it cost her over a grand for a penske truck for the trip so thats sound about right.
