Default TPMS sensor changes over the years

Anybody know if 2012 TPMS sensors will work on a 2008 JK?

I have an 08 Rubi Unlimited. I just picked up a set of brand new tires & wheels from a 2012. I noticed that the valve stems are now plastic, vs the hard stems on my 08. Wondering if I'll have to have my sensors swapped to the new wheels or not.

Thanks,
D

Thanks for the feedback. I'm not exactly sure how the TPMS system works, but I experimented by letting the air out of one of the new tires. It didn't trigger the TPMS warning though. However, iit was only laying the back of the JK, it wasn't mounted on the axle.

huh, well I got around to swapping them a couple weeks ago and the TPMS warning light has been going off ever since. It blinks for a while, then goes solid, indicating a TPMS system error.

Tried disconnecting the battery to reset the computer, and that didn't work either.

Any ideas?

Don't know if it's cheaper to take to a dealer to 'flash' the computer, or cheaper to have the old TPMS sensors swapped into the new wheels.

My understanding is that they changed them 1/2 way through 2010 and that the older sensors will work on the newer models but the sensors out of the newer models will not work in the older ones. I have seen issues first hand with tire swaps and the difference in the sensors. maybe the 12 is different I do buy and sell about 80 wranglers a year and I buy a lot of take off tires to put on thoes that i buy with the small steel wheels, I have only had a couple of issues and it was when I was putting newer sensors on older jeeps. its a pita to swap the sensors and rebalance.

..... or was it the other way around......

NOW IM CONFUSED?????

yeah, that's why I'm trying to avoid swapping the old rigid sensors into the new wheels - balancing might be rough.

It's great to have the nice shiny new wheels off the 2012, but I can't pass VT inspection like this. so I need to figure something out.

I've read a few posts about finding somebody with a TPMS programmer, so that might be my next step.

sounds like a good excuse to buy a superchips. Then you can just turn the tpms off...... nothing like a good mod excuse
