traction control

Please help I'm a newbie to the JK but not to off roading. I bought a 07 Unlimited Rubicon. Is there any way to turn off the traction control, jeep screwed up with this idea. Since when does a trail rated jeep get stuck in mud 2 wheel drives can go through. Any help will be greatly apreciated.

Welcome to the forum! :)

"On" is pretty self explanatory.

"Partial Off" (4-high or 2wd only) is the mode that is entered when you press the "ESP off" button. It turns off the TCS (traction control) portion of ESP, but leaves on the other ESP functions. Jeep recommends this for snow, sand or gravel to gain more traction. Even though the TCS is off, the limited slip function of the TCS remains active.

"Off" mode can be engaged in 4-high by holding the "ESP Off" button for 5 seconds while stopped with the engine running. According to the manual, all ESP and TCS functions are turned off except for limited slip.

There is also an automatic ESP setting for 4-low, in which the setting is automatically switched to off when the transfer case is shifted to 4-low. It stays that way unless your speed reaches 40mph, at which point, it re-engages ESP.

As you can see, it is possible to turn off some of the ESP functions, but the electronic brake limited slip function is always on. I beleive some members have been able to modify their Jeeps to kill the ESP system entirely. Personally, I find the BLS to be helpful on the trail, especially since my rear diff is completely open.

Could you describe how traction control caused you to get stuck?

Most likely it's because when you go through mud and sand, you want to keep the wheels spinning and your momentum up. Traction control does not allow this to happen. When the traction control kicks in, it kills the momentum to one side or the other of the wheel that is moving the Jeep. This causes you to bog down. That is why Jeep designed the traction control to be able to be turned "partially off" or "full off" when in 4wd use.

Thanks. I'm not a mudder. Not on purpose, anyway.

Check the owner's manual, page 114 or so. It gives a procedure to disable the system (I had to do this for a time) completely.

The '07's don't have that. That turn the wheel left, right, turning on and off the switch thing starts in year '08.

There is a TSB called; "Electronic Stability Control Disable Feature For Modified 4WD Vehicles", that was intended to install this option in the '07's, but I don't think it worked. I read tons of posts from people who tried it and it didn't work.

There is a way that you can wire a switch to turn it off though.

I found a description of how to add a manual switch to your JK to disable it. The switch works great, but you should only use it when offroading, the ESP really can save your A$$ on the road. Here it is"

"It's probably elsewhere, but under the console is a big bunch of wires running from the front to the back on the driver's side of the e-brake handle. Inside of this bundle are two purple wires with LIGHT blue stripes. One is wound with a white wire. That's NOT the one you want. There is another one running alongside it that is purple with a DARK blue stripe. You want the one with the LIGHT blue stripe that's not wound with the white wire. I turned on the Jeep when I cut the purple and light blue stripe wire just to be sure and the lights came right on. Then splice in some extra wire and add your toggle. Sorry about the lack of picts, but it's buttoned back together and I'm not yanking the console again if I can help it."

OK, there is something I don't understand about the Traction Control System.
Reading the owner's manual, it describes the TCS, with "limited slip" brake control as one of its features. Yet, in the description, it says they both apply the brake to the spinning wheel.
It goes on to say when you disable ESP, the TCS turns off too, except for the "limitet slip" feature of the TCS.
What gets turned off in the TCS when you disable ESP, if the "limited slip" portion of TCS stays on?
