I still don't see how anything could possibly bind as long as you're going straight the whole time it's in 4HI. It's when you turn that it binds. As long as you're going straight everything is spinning the same speed anyway.

Agreed, assuming your tire pressures are exactly the same, and you are going exactly straight. Doesn't take much to bind them up.

Mine got stuck in reverse at a grocery store a few weeks back. The service manager told me he had seen a few cases of the linkage slipping off of the gear shift.

"there is a little plastic "button" that connects the cable from the shifter to the transfer case"... That came off/broke for me about a month ago. Dealer told me the plastic piece had a "manufacturing defect".
I was on a gravel road, shifting thru 4hi-N-4lo and back when the damn shifter became "loose" in my hand and the t-case was stuck in neutral. Sitting on a backass road out in the boonies in 100deg heat with a jk that won't move sucks! Gave me my first opportunity to use the free roadside assistance... lol.
Thankfully I had no problems on my killer trip up in Colorado last week.

I agree a better part needs to be made. Plastic parts on a shift linkage is asking for trouble. It makes me want a spare, just in case.
Unless our JK's are a new beast, I have been shifting in and out of 4wd in vehicles on all kind of surfaces for the last 25 years or so and have had no problems with linkage breaking. Granted, you might have to roll forward or backward a little to engage or disengage but this "having to find some dirt" stuff is crap.

Did the vehicles over the last 25 years have plastic in the linkage?
I have done this on all kinds of surfaces, too. It's always harder on pavement.
The OP was on pavement, and his linkage broke.
Where's the "CRAP" in that? (other than the plastic part)

Oh well. I tried to give advice based on what happened to the OP, and my own past experience.
There was no need to get so hostile.

Even worse. A better attachment needs to be developed.

Sorry, don't know the part number, but I know that some people have "fixed" the problem temporarily with a cotter pin...search on these forums for this issue and/or problems shifting into 4lo and you'll come across some threads talking about it.
